Waldorf-Inspired Education

Waldorf-Inspired Education is a whole-human approach to teaching based on the philosophy of Rudolph Steiner and the developmental stages of the students. Traditionally this is thought of a teaching the "Head, Heart, and Hands" of the student. The student receives intellectual information, experiences, and connection in everyday learning. The students are then allowed to let the information rest as they go home, spend time with friends, family, or an after-school job, and sleep. The learning is able to percolate deeper within them and when it is reviewed the next day or next block, it is more fully cemented in long-term memory. Visit our page explaining the developmental stages of the high schooler.

Work-Study and Vocational Training

To ensure our students are ready for a variety of life experiences after they graduate high school, our students participate in an On-Campus Work-Study Program. Our students work on-campus for 1 hour each week (as little as 15 minutes a day) to learn first-hand how a community works together to meet its needs. Students work with a supervisor to learn job- and life-ready skills such as managing a schedule, tracking hours, safety and compliance training, resume building, and interviewing. These skills will be nurtured by work-study elective classes and supportive class schedules which provide many work-time options throughout the school day. Students receive 0.5 credit hours each year from their work-study experience and must have 2 credit hours of work-study hours to graduate from Azure Fields Charter High School.

Students also take Vocational Training classes such as agriculture, wood shop and machine shop, technology classes, and business classes. They have the option to take additional career and technical education classes to get trade certified in these areas.

Arts Integration

Arts integration is central to Waldorf-inspired and research-based education. Students at Azure Fields Charter High School take art classes each year to support their progress through the curriculum as their art skills are integrated into the coursework of each of their core classes. Each grade's art classes are structured to help students progress through developmental stages in preparation to become a well-rounded adult. For example, because 9th graders see the world in very black and white, polarized ways, the 9th grade art classes teach them to sketch black and white drawings, focusing on light and shadow and how they interplay. Processing this viewpoint through art helps them to integrate deep lessons for life and prepare them for the next layer of development into adulthood.

Farm-to-Table

Our students are taught to appreciate, and be good stewards over nature through our Farm-to-Table approach. We are partnering with Hedgerow Hill Farm to allow our students to work in nature and practice not only growing their own food, but also understand how farm animals provide for us from food to textiles and other tools. Students will have the opportunity to visit the farm throughout the year to observe and work. In addition to the farm experience, our students will also learn about urban gardening through hydroponic and aquaponic gardens in the classrooms that students will take care of as part of the work-study program. As the plants mature, our students will learn how to harvest, prepare, and eat the food they have helped to grow. These experiences help our students prepare for an ever uncertain future through a practical understanding of self-reliance and community engagement.
