Student Life
At 8:18 am, Jane Doe gets on the FrontRunner at the American Fork FrontRunner station. She sits with other Azure Fields students as they head to school. At 8:33 am she arrives at the Orem FrontRunner Station where the Azure Fields bus is waiting for her and the other students from the train and any that were dropped off. Once they’re all aboard the bus take them 15 minutes to Azure Fields.
Jane and several other students drop their phone off in the office so they can focus on school. Then they head into the gym for the pledge and morning verse to begin the day. After that she heads upstairs to English.
In English she and her cohort have been studying Shakespeare by looking at 2 plays in tandem: Romeo and Juliet and Merchant of Venice. She and a small group present a skit where Portia gives advice to Juliet and Antonio gives advice to Romeo. Tomorrow she’ll do a write-up contrasting the two plays in more depth.
After English, she and her cohort have Secondary Math I. She begins by working on the Bell Ringer. The math unit is on probabilities and they are getting ready for the test. She reviews her portfolio where she’s kept track of her learning and discusses the review questions with other students. They ask the teacher questions and soon it’s time for History.
This semester she and her cohort have Intro to World History. They’ve been studying revolutions and every day in class is exciting. They look at stories of people who decided to revolt against the government and why. But today is her cohort’s once-monthly trip to the Farm. They’ve been given an assignment about how farm work would get done during a revolution or any other war and they’ll work on it tomorrow. Today they board the school’s bus and head down to Hedgerow Hill Farm.
Once they get there they meet with the farmers and separate for instructions on how to build a fence or work on harvesting. Then they get to work. When they finish, they load back up on the bus and head back to school for Lunch and Study Hall.
Jane has study hall first and lunch second. Today she’s spending 15 minutes of Study Hall doing her work-study job. She helps take care of the in-classroom hydroponic garden right now but next year she’ll be able to apply to be an office assistant or teacher’s aid. She clocks in and checks in with her supervisor. Her supervisor gives her instructions for her day’s task and she gets to work. One of her friends has the same work-study station and they talk as they complete their work for the day.
When she finishes she clocks out and gets her lunch. She eats with her friends in the gym. Sometimes she gets school lunch, but today she brought lunch from home.
After lunch she and her cohort split to go to electives. Jane goes to theater while others in her cohort go to Tech as a Tool, Art. Debate, Music, or Woodworking. Theater is taught by the executive director and even though it is hard, it is fun. In class they work on a warm-up acting exercise colloquially known as the Screaming Circle of Death and they get points for how creative they make each “death”. 9th graders work on improv and today’s lesson is about pulling inspiration from school. She and her classmates partner up and practice what they’ve learned.
Her last class of the day is Woodworking, another elective. She has been working on carving a spoon. After the teacher has called the class to order and given instructions, she picks up her spoon and continues working on it. She’ll probably finish it today. Next week they'll learn how to use a lathe.
When class ends she picks her phone up from the office and boards the bus to go back home. She gets to the train station in time to catch the 4:50 train to American Fork along with the other students who take the train home. On the train she reviews her math notes. She doesn’t have homework and is able to spend the rest of the evening with her family and friends.
